High tea is a British tradition that originated in the mid-19th century. It is often confused with the more refined and elegant tradition of afternoon tea, but the two are quite different. High tea was originally a working-class meal that was taken later in the day, while afternoon tea was a more formal and elegant affair enjoyed by the upper classes. The term "high tea" is thought to have originated from the working-class custom of having their main meal of the day at a high table, such as a kitchen or dining table, rather than a low table like a coffee table or a Japanese-style dining table. This meal was typically taken in the late afternoon or early evening and consisted of a hearty spread of hot and cold dishes, including meat pies, roasted meats, fish, bread, cakes, and tea. The working-class families would sit around the table and enjoy the meal together, often using the opportunity to catch up on the day's events and share news with each other. The meal was also an opportunity to take a break from work and recharge for the evening ahead. Over time, the tradition of high tea evolved and became popular among the middle and upper classes. It was no longer seen as a meal for the working classes but became a fashionable social occasion. The traditional fare of high tea was replaced with more delicate sandwiches, scones, cakes, and pastries, and the tea was served from fine china tea sets. Today, high tea is enjoyed by people all over the world as a special occasion or a treat. It is often served in hotels and tea rooms, with a selection of sandwiches, scones, cakes, and pastries, along with a pot of tea. The tradition of high tea has evolved, but its roots in the working-class culture of Britain remain, and it continues to be a cherished tradition for many. In conclusion, high tea originated as a working-class meal taken later in the day, and over time it evolved into a fashionable social occasion enjoyed by the middle and upper classes. Today, it is a beloved tradition enjoyed by people all over the world.
